Everything You Need to Know About Companies House ID Verification Requirements
From 18 November 2025, all company directors and people of significant control (PSCs) will need to prove who they are through ID checks with Companies House.
This major change comes under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act (ECCTA) 2023. The goal is to stop fraud, make company information more reliable, and help people see who really runs UK businesses.
The process is simple, but it’s important to know what’s changing and when.
Why Are These Changes Happening?
For years, Companies House has been criticised for not doing enough to prevent fraudulent company activity and the misuse of some UK companies for criminal purposes. The new ID requirements are a direct response to these concerns.
By ensuring that only verified individuals can act as company directors or PSCs, the government aims to:
- Reduce economic crime and fraud
- Increase transparency about who controls UK companies
- Make it harder for criminals to hide behind anonymous companies
These changes should make it easier for honest businesses to operate with confidence.
Who Has to Verify Their Identity?
The new rules apply to a wide range of people and entities involved with UK companies, including:
- All company directors (existing and new)
- Persons with Significant Control (PSCs)
- Authorised Corporate Service Providers (ACSPs), such as accountants or solicitors acting as agents
If you fall into any of these categories, you’ll need to verify your identity with Companies House.
Key Dates and Deadlines
The rollout of these requirements is happening in different phases. They are:
- 8 April 2025: Voluntary ID verification opens for directors and PSCs.
- 18 November 2025: Mandatory for all new directors and PSCs on appointment or incorporation.
- 18 November 2025 – November 2026: Existing directors and PSCs must verify their identity within 12 months, or by their time of their company’s next confirmation statement due date.
- Spring 2026: Anyone filing documents with Companies House must be verified.
It’s important to keep an eye on communications from Companies House and your company’s filing deadlines.
How Will Identity Verification Work?
You can read our detailed guide here, including information on our Director ID solution which streamlines the entire process. In summary, there are two main ways to verify your identity:
Option 1 – Directly via Companies House
Use the GOV.UK One Login service.
Verification can be done online using a smartphone or computer, or in person at a participating Post Office
You’ll need a valid photo ID (passport or driving licence), supporting documents, your address history, and a unique email address.
Wallace White is licensed to provide this verification service using secure photo verification software.
Option 2 – Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
- Your accountant, solicitor, or company agent can verify your identity if they’re registered as an ACSP.
- This is often the easiest route if you already use a professional service provider.
What Information Will You Need?
To complete the verification process, you’ll need:
- A valid photo ID (UK or international passport, UK driving licence)
- Your full name (including evidence of any former names, such as birth or marriage certificates)
- Date of birth
- Home address and evidence of address history for the past 12 months
- A valid and unique email address
This information should match what’s on record at Companies House.
What Happens If You Don’t Comply?
The consequences of not verifying your identity are serious:
- You cannot be appointed or remain as a director or PSC.
- Company filings may be blocked.
- You could face financial penalties or be disqualified as a director.
Companies House will not accept filings from unverified individuals. Companies with unverified directors who are not able to file mandatory documents with Companies House may face financial penalties or be struck off the register.
Practical Steps to Prepare
- Check your details: Make sure your information at Companies House is up to date.
- Gather your documents: Ensure you have a valid passport or driving licence.
- Talk to your agent: If you use an accountant or solicitor, check they’re registered as an ACSP.
- Watch for updates: Companies House will contact you about your deadlines and next steps.
